"Red Planet" is an entertaining film that evokes the imagination and attempts to deal with the possibility of the colonization of Mars once/if Earth becomes uninhabitable.
A crew from NASA are sent to Mars to investigate what went wrong with the Mars Terra forming project. When the crew arrive on Mars, things are not what they seem. Suddenly the crew are left to find a way back to Earth against impossible odds.
The film stars Carrie Anne Moss (The Matrix) and Val Kilmer (Heat, The Prince of Egypt, Tombstone). Carrie Anne Moss plays Kate Bowman, the mission commander. Her character remains surprisingly feminine as she strongly leads five men whom have her respect. Val Kilmer plays the reluctant hero Gallagher, who surprises everyone with his ingenuity. Gallagher and Commander Bowman hold an emotional bond that gives the film a romantic element.
The film has a powerful, sequential beginning that clearly tells the audience where the plot is heading. Val Kilmer spins off plenty of those one-liners we all love so much and as long as you don't attempt to question how the characters managed to survive the explosions and their death defying feats (without a scratch most of the time) then you will probably enjoy this film.
In Conclusion Red Planet is a man versus nature themed film with a slight romantic element for the girlies and plenty of action to keep the boys entertained. It is a suspenseful film that on many occasions leaves you gripping the edge of your seat. All I would recommend is that you let your imagination go and have fun with this (at times) far-fetched plot.
