Regular readers know I'm something of an Oscar nut who revels in the more awful parts of the annual awards show. Usually I go into a big breakdown of the whole thing guaranteed to make the average person's eyes glaze over. Luckily for you, I don't feel that anal this year.
What I want to mention is a handful of awards going to unknowns, outsiders or the simply unexpected winners. My favorite moment was Jon Stewart bringing Marketa Irglova back to the stage to have a chance to speak after she was brutally cut off before the commercial. She gave a sweet little speech about dreams coming true and believing in yourself. Stewart showed extreme class giving this Czech underdog a chance to speak after the orchestra smashed her moment. She and Glen Hansard beat the triple headed Disney monster to win for best song and Stewart gave her back the richly deserved spotlight.
I loved Tilda Swinton's slightly unhinged speech comparing her agent's ass to that of an Oscar statue. She clearly didn't expect to win and that gave her comments a feel of refreshing honesty that beat the typical recitation of names.
And the awarding of an Oscar to former exotic dancer Diablo Cody for best original screenplay was pure joy. Her Juno script was wonderfully original and richly deserving the award. But to see someone take a very odd path to get to this point just gives me a warm fuzzy. Plus she has the coolest name in all of Hollywood. I think I'm developing a weird little writer crush on her.
Mostly, the show handed out awards to outsiders of one type or another and that's just perfect. Artists should almost by definition be outsiders. Too much homogenization is not healthy for the arts and Hollywood is all to often guilty of it. And yet it's biggest, glitziest night managed to drop virtually all its praise on those who defied that tendency. Perfect.
