Time to start earning my non-existent paycheck for this site.
As we move out of the summer, I start to get really irritated with where I live. Upstate NY flat out sucks if you want to see indie films as early as possible. Don't get me wrong, I love the Spectrum Theater in Albany dearly. It is my absolute favorite place to go see a movie. But being away from a major city means we wait weeks or months to get the stuff not being pimped by the big studios. I do get a lot of invites to screenings of these things down in NYC but I have two young kids, which makes arranging a trip to the city often too much trouble. So let's take a quick trip through the movies that I'm interested in. The PR folks working these little movies do their best to make my inbox cry uncle so let's actually show off some of their goodies. I'll try to do a little of this every day until I'm caught up. That should be sometime in 2013.
The Aristocrats Supposedly, comedians love to tell what is supposedly the world's filthiest joke to each other. The joke itself, is not particularly funny. What makes it a popular one to tell is the freedom to invent the most offensive details imaginable to add to any particular telling of the joke. Think of it as a game of “Can You Top This” with good taste taking a severe beating in the process. The Aristocrats is a documentary about the joke and is the brainchild of Paul Provenza and Penn (Penn & Teller) Jillette. Poster Trailer & Videos "Be An Aristocrat" Contest Right off the bat I'm interested because I've been a fan of Penn & Teller about as far back as I can remember. Their twisted brand of humor is right up my alley. Check out this comment in a letter Penn writes to go with the press notes: You can tell right away our flick ain’t for everyone. Our movie uses that four letter word that begins with “C.” Our movie uses that word a lot. A way lot. You know the word; it’s the word you say and everyone is automatically sexually harassed. A hostile work environment in one word. It’s the word that adults call “The C word” in front of other adults. Adults who say every other dirty word as every part of speech won’t say that goddamn C word. When Aristocrats say the C word in the movie, it’s worse than just using the C word. We don’t use it in anger or as a mere ejaculation. We don’t even use it as synecdoche. The Aristocrats mean it as the real thing. We’re not just using dirty words; we’re using dirty images, and dirty ideas. And even worse, we’re doing it just for fun. Just for a laugh. The movie’s not for everyone.
At a time when Hollywood is becoming increasingly paranoid about offending anyone, it's nice to see a movie that revels in its offensiveness. Broken Flowers If you love intelligent movies, then the teaming up of director Jim Jarmusch and actor Bill Murray should seem like a gift from the gods. Check out a trio of clips from this upcoming movie. Picking up the List Here's the Plan Where Do You Work?
Dirty Love The movie was written by Jenny McCarthy. Feel free to take a moment and digest that thought. Far more than a Playboy model or gameshow host, McCarthy has tried her hand at screenwriting. Apparently the idea was originally pitched to FOX as a series but they deemed it to racy so McCarthy rewrote it as a feature film. I find myself simultaneously intrigued and skeptical on this movie. I'm told that it's very good but if I had a dollar for every time a PR person told me a movie wasn't very good, I wouldn't be able to buy a cup of coffee. I'll let you know as soon as I can watch it for myself.
That's enough for today. I'll be back tommorrow with more stuff to watch out for and possibly some actual commentary on something. Right now I need sleep. Three and a half hours a night just doesn't cut it. - John Shea
