13 Ghosts (2001)

E-mail Print PDF
I should have given up on horror movies after From Hell. I hit a good streak, two good horror movies in a row (Joy Ride and From Hell), however, I think I needed the grounding of another bad horror movie (If this was worse than the horrible Jeepers Creepers, I cannot yet decide). 13 Ghosts does not come close to the horror that the previous Dark Castle film, House on Haunted Hill, did. This is absolute trash, the only thing I give it credit for is its makeup work. If you wish to carry on and read my review, do so, at least you only have a loss of a few minutes instead of an hour and half. You can't say I didn't warn you.

13 Ghosts13 Ghosts deals with a family who inherits a strange, glass house (I admit, it is cool looking) after their eccentric uncle passes away. The uncle, it turns out, collected spirits to power the house, which is really a demonic machine used to look into hell. As you may have guessed, the family is locked in the house and the 13 ghosts get out. (I'm not going to spend a lot of time on this review, it's not worth it.) Also in the house is a ghost hunter (Matthew Lillard, my second favorite part of the movie) who has a pair of glasses that can see the ghosts (otherwise they are invisible). He attempts to help the family get out of the house before they are killed and some shit hits the fan. End of story.

Now for the gripes and little praise. The script is a typical slasher formula, people do things you know they shouldn't do... Blah blah blah... It's absolute shit, as is the acting on all parts, although Lillard is entertaining. I wanted Shannon Elizibeth along with the black babysitter (who is totally stereotypical and annoying) to be killed and the little boy too. Maybe I'm just bitter because I was expecting something entertaining, not God-awful. Although the make up was cool. Ohh yeah, there wasn't anything too scary in it either. What's the point of seeing a horror movie unless it scares you? Don't waste your money on this trash, see From Hell or Joy Ride instead.
