Plot:

[From Sony's site] CHARLIE'S ANGELS revolves around three female detectives- Natalie (Cameron Diaz) the bookworm, Dylan (Drew Barrymore) the tough girl, and Alex (Lucy Liu) the class-act-as intelligent and multi-talented as they are ravishingly gorgeous and utterly disarming.

What can be done when Eric Knox, a soon-to-be billionaire, is kidnapped from his own office at Knox Technologies, and the company is in jeopardy of losing a billion dollars? Under the sure hand of their suave playboy boss, notorious for his clever ways of avoiding face-to-face meetings with his employees, the Angels use feminine charm, high-tech gadgets and hand-to-hand combat to save themselves, Charlie and thousands of innocent people.

IGN managed to get their dirty little fingers on some new photos from the movie. Looking at them I can only wonder what the hell these people were thinking while making this flick.

The full trailer is now out on the internet and well... it's interesting. The tone seems to be equal parts action and camp. Not necessarily an easy coupling of styles I would imagine. It features a considerable amount of wire-fighting, no doubt due to Matrix fight choreographer Wu Ping's influence.

Angel Vision got a hold of a picture of some dolls that are being manufactured for the movie. No, not those kind of dolls. These are action figures. Wait that doesn't sound good either. Never mind... Just check out the picture below. There is also a teaser poster for your viewing pleasure.

John Forsythe will be returning to reprise his role of Charlie from the TV show. He told Entertainment Weekly that the movie's intro no longer refers to a police academy because the Angels are no longer armed with guns.

The new introduction has a distinctly feminist ring to it saying, "very different little girls, who grew up to be very different women." This was not Cameron Diaz's idea. "I am a girl," she says, "and I love being a girl!"

Drew BarrymoreHeat Magazine ran a series of shots of Drew Barrymore taken during filming of the movie. In this scene she is preparing for a dive. The scene was shot in huge water tank in Los Angeles a few weeks back. If you're a guy and a fan of hers, check it out.

Cameron Diaz stepped up and took her turn at trying to quell the rumors of the movie's disfunctional cast. "Hey, listen, the film is going to be a lot of fun. The press never knows what really goes on. A lot of people were just really passionate about making the movie really enjoyable, and there are disagreements, but it wasn't like it was total turmoil."

She also defended producer/actor Drew Barrymore from rumors that she was struggling to maintain control. "Drew is a great producer, really. I think she really held the film together perfectly. Her passion probably kept it from actually getting out of control."

There is a teaser trailer now available for the movie adaptation of Charlie's Angels. This is definitely a teaser trailer. There is no footage from the movie in it at all. But it should give you an idea of what kind of movie is being made here. A really bad one.

Lucy Liu talked to the Scottish Daily Record about the rumors of her inability to get along with the rest of the cast. Speaking of Drew Barrymore she said, "Drew Barrymore is always smiling, you just want to hug her. All of us are like sisters. It is great to go to work."

She denies the arguments with Bill Murray too. "He's great. I have heard that there have been problems with our chemistry. It has been hurtful…I try to get along with everyone. There are absolutely no problems. Just wait until the film comes out, you'll see."

Producer Leonard Goldberg decided it might be a good idea to try and squash some of the nasty rumors surrounding this production. Talking to columnists Marilyn Beck, Stacy Jenel Smith and Stephanie DuBois about the rumors of Lucy Liu's behavior he said, "It's untrue -- and unnecessary, unwarranted. To cast Lucy as the villain is completely untrue and unfair."

He did confirm that the there are still four weeks of production left.

Just how many times has the script for Charlie's Angels been rewritten? Ten times? Nope. Twenty times? Nope, try thirty times. The NY Post managed to get a hold of the script. Each revision was printed on a different color paper starting with blue. The hordes of writers managed to use nine different colors three times each before finishing the script with yellow for the fourth time.

The most recent version, with a date of April 12, is by Ed Solomon (Super Mario Bros.) and Ryan Rowe (Tapeheads). It also lists Robert Harling (First Wives Club), Mitch Glazer (Scrooged), Akiva Goldsman (Batman & Robin), Susannah Grant (Ever After), John August (Go), Steve Pink (Grosse Pointe Blank), D.V. DeVincentis (High Fidelity) and Zak Penn (Inspector Gadget). My fingers got tired just typing out that list.

Even though the most recent script is dated April 12, shooting began way back on January 10. The start of shooting was delayed repeatedly do to the script problems and that little problem of finding someone to be in the movie. The delays have forced the cancellation of shooting in Las Vegas, Hawaii and Big Bear, California. To top it all off the three Angels have apparently fought over screen time and costumes. That last bit is just rumor but it all adds up to a production with some serious problems.

If you want to see some of the movie being shot and you live in the area of Cabrillo Beach, you're in luck. Shooting will take place their today and tommorrow. Shots will be set up in three areas. The parking lot near the bathhouse is one of the areas. The beach outside the breakwater is another. Inside the harbor of the Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, berth 60 is the third area. Apparently Drew Barrymore's character lives on a sailboat.

If you do happen to see the shooting, send us a report.

Sparks are apparently flying on the movie's set. Apparently Lucy Liu and Bill Murray got into a huge argument during filming. Liu reportedly questioned the writing of a scene with Murry who was offended. Rumors appeared that had Liu taking a shot at Murray but the crew denies it. Following the blow up shooting was stopped for the day. Liu, Barrymore, Diaz and Murray met with director McG the next day and apparently settled the matter. Shooting is now continuing as normal.

Thanks to Variety.

February 16, 2000

Tim Curry talked to Popcorn about work on the set. He plays the president of a satellite company who is the movie's main villain. He says that "it's a very, very fun set, and you know, it's a lark." Talking about the three stars Curry goes on to say "They're the karate kids. Drew was very keen that there wouldn't be any guns in the movie. Which I sort of applaud I have to say. Unfortunately it meant that they spent three months with, you know, a hundred trainers. They're all so limber it's disgusting!" Uh-huh... I'm sure he's hating every minute of it...

February 11, 2000

Cameron Diaz talked to Now Magazine about her current role in the Charlie's Angels movie. "The training and exercise has brought out the tough girl who's never been far below the surface. I love to kick butt." Why am I mentioning this here? It has something to do with the movie and... well that's about it really.

Cameron DiazThere are few details too small for us to share with you if we happen to get a hold of them. To your left is a shot of Cameron Diaz from the set. What is going on? I have no idea. Why is she wearing Underoos? Not a clue. But it's a picture from the set and I imagine that some of you are rather excited about it. Click on the picture for the full version.

Crispin Glover (Back to the Future) has joined the cast. He will be playing one of the movie's villains.

25 January, 2000
Matt LeBlanc has joined the cast. He will play Lucy Liu's boyfriend. His character is movie actor completely unaware of his girlfriend's secret life as an angel.

Tim Curry (Clue, Rocky Horror Picture Show) has signed on to play the lead villain in the movie. If you want a campy movie it's hard to go wrong with the frequently over the top Curry.

They are definitely shooting the movie. Or at least they've started preparing to shoot. It's hard to tell exactly from these shots taken on set. They show Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu on set. The one shot looks like it could have been taken during filming but the other two are clearly behind the scenes shots. They were taken for the British magazine Heat.

The latest script is in from Susannah Grant (Ever After) but still with no ending. This version opens the movie with a sequence in which one of the angels, in disguise as a stewardess, escorts a terrorist off a plane. The movie will open up with the traditional "Once upon a time.." and will then go into the angels' histories. Expect extreme camp from this movie.

It sounds as if the plot is no longer about kidnapping fashion models and now has something to do with corruption in auto racing. They have apparently ordered 8 mock ups of Indy race cars for use in the filming. The angels will be ordered to protect Eric Knox from being kidnapped by Roger Corwin, a big telecommunications guy. It's actually a plot to let Knox capture Charlie himself. Don't put too much into that though. The script still has no ending.

13 January, 2000
They might not have a script ready yet but it sounds like they're getting ready to start filming anyway. The 'Phantom Scooper' turned in this report:

"Is this film shooting? There is a BIG production set up down the street from me and one of the store owners in the area said that is was for Charlies Angels? I thought the script was still being worked on? The store owner also said that they would be filming at a FOSTER FREEZE (an old chain of Ice Cream shops here in the states) that is two doors down from her. All of this is taking place in Torrance, California. About 1 block away from the High School Where they filmed Buffy and BH 90210.

I made my way to the set (I made a trip to the bakery next door to the Ice Cream place their filming), and it is definately filming there. I spoke to security and he told me Charlie's Angels was filming there. I asked him if Cameron Drew or Lucy were there and he said "Oh yeah!, They walking all around, you'll probobly see them!" Unfortunately I did not. But there is also a Pizza place one more shop down. I think I'll be eating lunch there. I didn't know scoop reporting could be so fattening!"

Thanks to Dark Horizons.

First they couldn't get someone to play the role of the third angel and now they can't finish the script. Despite what we last heard, the start of prinicpal photography is set to begin today instead of a month ago. The problem is that they don't have a completed script yet. The most recent version is by Robert Harling (First Wives Club) as of earlier this week. The script is incomplete though. There is no ending. His previous version was also incomplete. The funny thing is that with a script without an ending, they are apparently giving thought to rewriting the opening. Anyone want to start taking bets on actors leaving because of other engagements if this doesn't get finished quickly? For the record, the list of screenwriters to work on the script is Robert Harling, Susannah Grant, John August, Steve Pink & D. V. De Vincentis, Zak Penn, John August and Ed Solomon and Ryan Rowe.

No guns. That's right, the intrepid trio of beauties will fight crime without guns. Sam Rockwell, who will play Drew Barrymore's boyfriend in the flick, told Entertainment Weekly that "It's basically about three badass bitches who fight evil." He elaborates by adding, "These are not the same Angels from the '70s," he said. "First of all, these Angels don't have any guns. And also, they're supersmart." Why do I get the impression that they're going to spend the movie flashing bad guys so the other Angels can beat him up while he's distracted?

The movie is going to be a remake of the old series though. These are three new angels fighting crime for Charlie. Interestingly enough, John Forsythe is being considered to take over the voice of Charlie once again.

24 November, 1999
Sam Rockwell is a possibility to play Drew Barrymore's main squeeze in the movie.

22 November, 1999
It's finally official. Lucy Liu has signed on to be the third angel. It took a considerable amount of negotiating to her scheduling between appearing on 'Ally McBeal' and filming Charlie's Angels. This leaves the roles of Bosley and Charlie to be settled before shooting can begin. The official start of shooting is scheduled to begin December 6. Music video director McG (Joseph McGinty Nichol) will direct.

Thanks to The Hollywood Reporter.

18 November, 1999
Trouble continues for the remake of the tv show Charlie's Angels. The movie's producers have been aggressively courting Bill Murray for the role of Bosley. It now appears that they have failed to land him. Murry was nearly impossible to track down and when they finally did find him, he wanted about $1 million more for the part than they could afford to pay. Meanwhile, they have yet to strike a deal with Lucy Liu for the part of the third angel. They are talking but have yet to settle anything. Apart from Drew Barrymore, who is producing this movie, and Cameron Diaz, who is getting a huge paycheck, they seem to be having trouble landing people for this movie. I wonder why that is.

Thanks to Reuters.

Just to add to the confusion surrounding Liu, in an interview with KTTV 11 (an LA tv station) she said that this will be her next movie. Is she jumping the gun or has a deal actually been reached?

3 November, 1999
Could we have resolution on the third angel situation? AICN is reporting that Lucy Liu, best known for her role on the TV series Ally McBeal. I think this is actually some very good casting. We'll see if it's accurate though. Too many times somebody has said a certain actress had the part and then it turns out she didn't. According to the NY Daily News, Liu wants to take the part but needs time off from Ally McBeal to do it. They don't seem to think that producer David E. Kelley is likely to give her the time off because he doesn't want to set a precedent for his various shows. Leonard Goldberg, producer of the Angels movie, says he has time to sign someone else if Liu can't free up time from her schedule. They would also love to get Ashley Judd but that probably won't happen due to a broken fibula from a jet ski accident. Whatever the case they intend to start production on December 6.

19 October, 1999
Oh no here we go again. The search for the third angel is back on again. Thandie Newton has apparently left the project due to scheduling conflicts. She suffers from the same malady that struck down Dougray Scott as Wolverine in the X-Men project. They are both caught in the never ending project known as Mission Impossible II. So now it's back to the drawing board. Somebody must want this role, right? Right?

Thanks to Variety.

6 October, 1999
It's all but official, Thandie Newton (Beloved) is the third angel. The start of production has actually been pushed back to December 6 to accomodate a script rewrite. John August (Go) is sharpening the script from Ryan Rowe and Ed Solomon (Men In Black). Sam Rockwell is in talks to join the cast. He would play the love interest to Drew Barrymore's character. Bill Murray has been made an offer to play Bosley but hasn't accepted yet. His acceptance will be based mostly on scheduling. Charlie himself is still uncast but that can wait as it is only a voice part.

Thanks to Variety.

5 October, 1999
For a change of pace we're not going to talk about casting. Nope. We're going to tell you that the angels will eat in the movie. Apparently Drew Barrymore is concerned about girls' health. She wants to show images of attractive women eating normally to give the message that it's okay for girls to eat. It's a thoughtful approach from Ms. Barrymore but it's pretty sad that anyone needs to be told it's okay to eat. Personally I need some good excuses not to eat...

Thanks to Cinescape.

4 October, 1999
Agghh! Make it stop! More rumors... Thandie Newton (Beloved) has been mentioned as yet another candidate in a seemingly endless line for the role of the third angel. They say that she will meet with Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz next week. The report mentions that filming is scheduled to begin this November. Oh yeah, don't bother asking Diaz about the casting, she doesn't know. Talking to the Calgary Sun, she says she hasn't heard anything yet. She also mentioned that her hair has been dyed brunette as they test different hair colors on her. Just to add to the confusion she says filming begins later this month.

1 October, 1999
Just cast someone already! Clearly the producers of this film are enjoying a moment in the spotlight with the speculation over the third angel. I'm really getting tired of writing about this subject. Anyway, the latest is that Gwyneth Paltrow was offered the role and turned it down. She was apparently offended that she would be paid less than Cameron Diaz. More non-news for you. It has been way to slow this week... Actually this makes me wonder about the script. A whole lot of actresses have passed on this role. It's pretty high profile so it would be great for someone looking to make a name for themselves and yet no one seems to want the part. Kind of makes you wonder why doesn't it?

Thanks to Cinescape.

30 September, 1999
With no confirmation on the third angel yet, we're forced to listen to every little rumor, some stranger than others. The most recent emerged from an interview Molly Shannon gave to the Toronto Sun. The rumor was mentioned to her and she neither confirmed or denied it, saying simply "Whew, think of it. Molly Shannon, a Charlie's Angel -- superstar." I'm as mystified by this as you are.

28 September, 1999
Still no confirmation on Salma Hayek as the third angel yet. Some other details are emerging though. The script is being tinkered with a bit. The Bosley parts are getting increased due to the possiblity of having Bill Murray in the part. Drew Barrymore is also doing some of the tinkering as the star/producer is entirely happy with it. The script supposedly contains a top secret surprise ending that no one but the top people on the project have seen.

Thanks to Dark Horizons.

24 September, 1999
Still no confirmation on the Salma Hayek rumor from yesterday but just to muddy the water a little, producer Leonard Goldberg has said that they are looking at Victoria Adams (Posh Spice) as a possibility for the role. He said "Posh Spice we talked to - we are still talking to." So consider the matter far from closed.

Thanks to Popcorn UK.

23 September, 1999
Could the third angel be Salma Hayek? That's what The Straits Times is reporting. They say that she has been chosen for the role and will be paid only $6 million for the part. They also report that Drew Barrymore is upset that she is only getting paid $13.5M for her part while Cameron Diaz is receiving $19M. It seems a bit odd since Barrymore is one of the producers that she would be complaining about the pay scale. I would consider this all to be rumor until more confirmation appears.

22 September, 1999
Singer Lauryn Hill has apparently turned down the role of the third angel alongside Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz. It's possible that the role could go to a relative unknown at this point.

Thanks to Dark Horizons.

1 September, 1999
It's rapidly becoming the most updated movie on the site. Today we have some possible details on the plot of the movie. This is based on a script dated last year so it may not be accurate. There are some spoilers so don't read any further if you don't want to know. The three new angels will be a scientist Natalie, the high-society Alex, and street wise Dylan. They are hired by a modeling agency to rescue three supermodels kidnapped by, get this, a fashion designer whose family is in the Swiss mafia and has fallen on hard times. Why were they kidnapped? This just gets better and better. They were kidnapped so they could be cloned. The clones could then be sold to every horny rich guy in the world. Alex allows herself to be kidnapped so that they can track down the bad guys. The other two angels and Bosley travel Europe searching for their teammate. The angels save the day of course and celebrate with a dip in the hot tub. We're then treated to a scene where we see the fate of all the cloned supermodels. For a full review of the script click here.

Thanks to Cinescape.

30 August, 1999
Remember that bit last week about Angelina Jolie being the front runner for the final angel? Ummmm... never mind. It would appear she was offered the role and passed on it. Back to the drawing board. They seem to be having a bit of difficulty in nailing down that last angel. She said the script was "cute and clever. Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz are already celebrities and they're going to have great fun spoofing their images with Charlie's Angels. I'm not at that point in my career, so audiences won't have as much fun watching me run around in high heels chasing bad guys and flipping my hair."

Thanks to the Calgary Sun.

25 August, 1999
The producers are still trying to fill the role of the third angel. Don't expect a really big name however. They feel they have that covered with Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz. What they want for the third angel is someone with good acting talent and lower price tag. Names considered include Agelina Jolie, Leonor Varela, Sandra Bullock and Peta Wilson. Of those Jolie is known to be on the short list.

23 August, 1999
Who is going to be the third angel? How about Victoria "Posh Spice" Adams? That's the rumor that the BBC is floating anyway. According to the Calgary Sun however, that's nonsense. The movie will not be an attempt to recreate the original angels. This will be set in 2000 and feature an all new trio of women. Producer Leonard Goldberg was interviewed about the movie and expressed his surprise at the interest it was generating. He wouldn't say who they're looking at to fill the final spot but did shoot down rumors currently floating about. The only rumor confirmed is that they want to get Bill Murray for the part of John Bosley. The voice of Charlie is still uncast but the original voice, John Forsythe, is still in the running. If at all possible they would like to do something to honor the original angels during the movie.

30 July, 1999
Could Bill Murray be joining the cast of this movie? Columbia is trying hard to get him into it in the part of John Bosley. No idea if he's actually interested or not, but they're trying.

Thanks to The Hollywood Reporter.

27 July, 1999
Some days, Hollywood makes this page far too easy. Endless sequels, movies based on old TV shows, and movies based on video games make finding bad projects about as hard to find as movie critics who dislike Pauly Shore movies. With that in mind, I think it's time to start keeping a close eye on Charlie's Angels. So far we know that Drew Barrymore is producing and starring in the movie. We also know that Cameron Diaz will be in it. The third angel is still a mystery. It now looks as if music video director McG (Joseph McGinty Nichol) will be the director. He is in talks to take over the project. Shooting will begin in October with a script from Ed Solomon and Ryan Rowe. Theoretically it would be released in the summer of 2000.

Thanks to The Hollywood Reporter.
