Tarantino's Casino Royale?

Could Quentin Tarantino be seriously chasing after making a 007 movie, one based on the Ian Flemming novel Casino Royale?

In an interview with SCI FI Wire, Tarantino indicated an interest in making a low budget character driven Bond film.  He would make it Pierce Brosnan's fifth and final turn as 007.

His hope is that producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli would go for the low budget and one more time around from Brosnan.  "Wouldn't it be great to have a James Bond movie that didn't cost $115 million and only cost $40 million or something like that?" he asked. "You know it's going to make its money back, and we [would] all do good. Maybe we win the critics this time, then you're back in business the way you were before."

The first few Bond movies bear little resemblance to the current films.  Originally character driven with only a little action, they have transformed into action movies with huge action sequences and special effects.  Because of that change, going back could be considered risky.  Tarantino begs to differ.  "I don't see that they have anything to lose at all," Tarantino said in an interview while promoting his latest film, Kill Bill, Vol. 2. "They've got this gigantic franchise, they can't do anything wrong with it. Pierce Brosnan's only going to do one more movie for them, if that, so if he stayed on to do one more with me, let's just this one year go my way and do it a little differently. I won't do anything that will ruin the series."

Don't get your hopes up though.  Even Tarantino admits there is only a "thin chance" he would get the project.
