Dried OutSome sort of dried out plant.  Possibly queen anne's lace.  I don't know.  Anyway, what made me take the picture wasn't so much the plant as the ability to create layers of patterns.  On top is the dried out wrinkly bulb thingies.  Then there is the tripod shapes of the plant's structure.  Then there is the rusty fence.  And finally, the green plants in the deep background.  Taken all together, I found it pleasing.  Hopefully you do as well.

HickoryTussock Moth caterpillarThis little fellow was crawling around on my grill.  A little research tells me that it is the caterpillar of the hickory tussock moth.  And while it is certifiably adorable, it's also poisonous.  Not deadly, but for a lot of people, handling one will cause a painful rash.  So if you spot one, the smart move is look but don't touch.

Not LightningA very strange cloud formation. I first saw it out of the corner of my eye, thinking I was seeing a bolt of lightning. But when I turned to look it was clear that that "bolt" was not moving.  The sun was shining between two clouds, causing this highlighted area in the shape of a lightning bolt.

Blog - Psychotic Reactions Written by John Shea

I went to see Scott Pilgrim vs. The World earlier this evening.  It's a great movie that I enjoyed thoroughly.  Odds are good I will rewatch it endlessly on DVD.

One question.  Why the hell didn't you go?

Seriously, I'm disappointed in you people.

Web of LightsTiming is everything in photography.  I shot this web repeatedly during the afternoon.  As the sun moved across the sky, the angle of the light changed, making the web light up more brightly.  So my shots kept improving.  And then suddenly the light wasn't catching the web anymore and it became almost invisible.

Waiting helped make for a better photo but waiting too much would have made for a dull shot.

Night FlowerThis is me attempting to start playing around with the concept of bokeh.  That's the fancy word for lights and highlights going out of focus in a photo.  It can be quite beautiful when handled well.  This is probably not an example of that but that's why I experiment.  You can expect more such attempts in the near future.

And it goes without saying that I don't know what the flower is.

Justin TuckThe big guy is NY Giants DE Justin Tuck and he's making quite an impression on one young fan.

Yesterday I took my sons to the Giants training camp in Albany.  After practice the Giants had a couple of players come out and talk to the kids for a bit.  First was Tuck, who told them how important it was to get a good education.

After that was Eli Manning, who tried to talk about physical fitness but it was hard to tell because the crowd went a little bonkers at his appearance.  This is completely normal at camp these days.  Seven years ago, when he was a rookie, I very easily got his autograph for my first son at training camp.  Now, after he's won a Super Bowl, it's just about impossible.  Every time he appears, huge crowds flock to him and insanity ensues.  Yesterday, I actually pulled my sons away from an opportunity to get Eli's autograph because I was genuinely concerned about them getting stampeded by the crowd.  You can get a vague idea of the craziness here.

ThingyIf I had any sense, I'd buy a book on wildflowers and then look them up before posting a picture so that I could come across as knowledgeable.  But that would be dishonest.  I like taking pictures of wildflowers but I don't actually care about the actual plants.  So basically my attitude can be summed up as "Ooh.  Pretty."

Anyway, this nifty looking fellow grows in a dry stream bed behind my house.  I've seen them around before but usually they are much smaller.
